THE INJURIES WE TREAT

Rotator Cuff Tears

Rotator cuff tears account for almost half of all major shoulder injuries. The rotator cuff is a group of small muscles, situated close to the ball-and-socket joint of the shoulder. These muscles are responsible for raising and lowering the arm.

Rotator cuff tears are most common in people over the age of 40. A tear may result in younger patients following acute trauma or repetitive overhead work or sports activity. A cuff tear may also happen with another injury to the shoulder, such as a fracture or dislocation.

Symptoms include weakness, loss of full movement and shoulder pain. Increased pain is experienced during overhead activities.

Tears of the rotator cuff are best treated by surgical repair. Physiotherapy is often effective in treating inflammation of the cuff where a tear is not present.
