HOW WE TREAT SPORTS INJURIES

Following your initial assessment with specialist Gordon Mackay, you will be advised of the most appropriate treatment option for you. The surgical procedures below are the most common ones performed, however you will be given a full explanation including the benefits and risks specific to your medical condition before deciding to proceed with surgery.

Arthroscopy is one of the most common orthopaedic procedures and is performed to diagnose and treat problems in the knee, shoulder, elbow, ankle, and wrist. It involves examining the inside of the joint using a special camera inserted through small cuts in the skin. The surgeon will examine the inside of the joint for damage to the joint surfaces, ligaments and cartilages and wash out any loose material caused by wear of the joint surfaces. Problems such as torn knee cartilage, meniscal tears, and small tears in the muscles and tendons can often be treated successfully with arthroscopic surgery.

As the procedure is performed as keyhole surgery it usually results in less post-operative pain and a faster recovery compared to open surgery.
