THE INJURIES WE TREAT
Ankle Oseteochondral (OC) Defects
Osteochondral (OC) defects can be found in the talus region of the ankle joint where the cartilage and underlying bone have been damaged following some form of trauma to the joint. This is not uncommon in patients who have had a sprained ankle which has failed to settle and symptoms still persist such as pain on weight bearing and instability.
There are many grades of severity for this type of injury ranging from minor bruising to large pieces of bone and cartilage breaking off and lying loose in the ankle joint.
Treatment for an osteochondral defect varies and depends on the size of the defect and the extent of bone and cartilage loss. The most common surgical procedure is an arthroscopy or if a more severe injury is prevalent, you may need a reconstruction operation.
